Tonight’s devotion time with Kayla was special to me. Not because we were talking about some issue she has been having or because she fell repentant for every naughty thing she has ever done. Tonight we actually had a conversation about the topic of the devotion. It went something like this.
Our reading was Jeremiah 29:11-13 (some favorite verses to cling to): “I know the plans I have for you” announces the LORD. “I want you to enjoy success. I do not plan to harm you. I will give you hope for the years to come. Then you will call out to me. You will come and pray to me. I will listen to you. When you look for me with all your heart, you will find me…”
We’ve been going through the ONE YEAR Book of Devotions for Kids by Tyndale. While some of the topics are a little too old for Kayla and they have to be adjusted by us, this has been a good book for us. It is the right length for her attention span and has great scripture reading that she can do herself to go along with the topics.
In tonights reading, the boy in the story had been to the circus and was admiring the tightrope walker. His father asked him if he knew why he never fell off the rope. The boy didn’t know and asked his father for an explanation. The man said that the tightrope walker never falls because no matter what happens around him, he keeps his eyes on the destination at the end of the rope. The mom added that “Christians are tightrope walkers too. A christian who doesn’t keep his eyes on God loses his balance and falls.”
Kayla’s eyes lit up. She said “Ooooh I know! Just like what we talked about in church when Peter was in the boat during the storm. Jesus told him to step out of the boat and come to Him. Peter did. Only, when he took his eyes off of Jesus, he melted into the water.” (Not sure about the melting part. hehehe)
I wanted to jump up and yell “YES! YES! YES!” Instead, I gave her a big grin and continued talking with her through tears in my eyes.
We were able to have a nice short talk about how this applies to our lives personally and how we can watch for this happening around us.
I praise the Lord for Kayla’s open and surrendered heart. I praise Him for adults who are willing to speak truth into her life consistently. I am so thankful for each time we realize a teachable moment is upon us and grasp the moment tightly. Thank you Lord for the blessing of this little girl in my life.
